A Zone 9 Garden in Transition

”Zone

The end of January is almost here and that means only one thing here in Central Florida (Zone 9), the end of winter! The average last frost date here is January 31st and with that in mind I have started to transition my garden from a winter garden to a spring garden.

In the picture above you can see I still have quite a bit of lettuce growing and 2 broccoli plants left. Over the winter season my lettuce produced quite well as did the broccoli. The last two broccoli plants are still producing side shoots although they did not like the 80-degree day we had 3 days ago!

Bellow the two rows of lettuce is 2 rows of onions. They are all granex type yellow onions that I have been growing from seed. This is my first year growing this type of onion and hope for a decent crop. I hear they keep well, so I am growing more than my wife and I could eat in a few months!

Bellow the two rows of onions is a row of garlic. This is my first time growing garlic. My wife and I go through about a dozen bulbs of garlic a year in cooking so that is how many I planted. They are growing leaves way faster than I expected and I hope to have a few nice bulbs!

I have quite a few seeds that are starting to germinate in doors and I also have quite a few seedlings of other plants waiting for the last frost!

What type of transition are you experiencing?
