Spanish Moss – An Abundant Resource

In many parts of Zone 9 Spanish Moss grows abundantly. Often times it can grow so much that it will completely take over a tree. Thankfully, there are quite a few uses for Spanish Moss in the Zone 9 Garden!

Mulch

Spanish Moss can be used as highly effective mulch for container or traditional gardening. The moss will cut off light to the soil helping prevent weeds and maintain soil moisture. As the Spanish Moss breaks down it will also add nutrients to the soil.

Compost

Spanish Moss is a great addition to a compost pile. It contains high amounts of micronutrients and a fair amount of nitrogen. Spanish Moss does not break down very fast so it is best to use smaller amounts in a compost pile or to place it in a slow composting pile.

Fertilizer

Spanish Moss Tea is a useful fertilizer. When brewed properly the tea can be fed directly to plants and it will provide low levels of many nutrients that are immediately available to plants and will not burn plants if over dosed. It also helps add beneficial bacteria to the soil.

Orchid Companion

While not a good growing medium for Orchids it is a great companion. Many orchid growers will put live Spanish Moss on top of their growing medium and allow it to grow over the edge to help soften the look of the container.

Considerations

  • Wild Spanish Moss often contains chiggers (biting red bugs)
  • Boiling or Micro-waving will help sterilize the moss
  • Do not collect from private property with out permission
