Begin Spring soil prep in the fall – For the most part, soil found in zone 9 is rather sandy and does not contain many nutrients. To ensure a successful garden come spring soil prep should begin in the fall. Start composting and using cover crops.

Plant vegetables in the correct location – Many fruit producing plants (such as tomatoes and peppers) require around 6 hours of direct sunlight while plants that produce edible leaves (like lettuce and chard) often do will in a partially shady area.

Use the correct type of fertilizer – In general, most fruit producing plants do not like nitrogen heavy fertilizers. They cause the plant to grow fast and green but greatly reduce fruit production. Make sure the fist number on fertilizer to be used is lower than the second (IE 4-8-8).

Continue to add organic matter all season – Organic matter (such as compost and manure) helps all plants grow better and produce well. All threw the season organic matter should be added to the top of the soil on a regular basis to keep the soil healthy and the plants growing.
