Avoid the Heat – Work Early

This is the fifth post of five in the Summer Seasonal Series

As summer is approaching the mercury is rising. Temperatures in Zone 9 can sometimes reach over 100 degrees in the summer so it is important to protect yourself from any injury or illness that the extreme heat can cause. The best way to avoid heat related health issues caused by working in the garden is to work early in the day.

The hottest part of the day is between Noon and 4pm. The suns heat radiates off of everything this time of day and can cause many health issues. Starting to work in the garden just after sunrise will help avoid the extremes of the day.

Working earlier in the day is also less stressful to the plants you are working on. The heat is stress enough, no need to add to it!
