In Zone 9 Variety Matters

For most types of crops grown in the garden there are literately hundreds of varieties that could be grown. Tomatoes alone have over 7,500 varieties. These varieties vary in size, from the size of a grape to the size of a volley ball. They vary in color from yellow, to dark red, to purple and black.

The most important thing to pay attention to when buying a variety of plant to put in your garden is if that variety is recommended for the area you live in and when it should be planted.  When buying seeds online, the description should tell you if they will be successful in your area and when to plant them.  When buying in a store, you should look at the back of the package for the information. If there is not a good description the back of the package, you can always do a Google search for that variety using a smart phone.

Here are some considerations when buying seeds and plants for a Zone 9 Garden:

  • Zone 9 has hot summers with intense sun – Many plants can not survive this, for summer crops look for plants that are able to.
  • Zone 9 has a year round growing season – Many plants that grow in fall and spring in cooler climates will flourish in Zone 9 winters.
  • Some Varieties of plants are more Zone 9 hardy than others – Some plants will grow and produce but the crops will not taste as good.

Because of the great differences in varieties, we here at Zone9Garden.com are going to start compiling a list that thrives and produces good tasting crops here in Zone 9.  Do you have suggestions?  Visit our forum from the link bellow and let us know!
