Growing Eggplant for the First Time

I have decided to grow some eggplant for the first time this year. I have picked “Black Beauty” for my first attempt.
Eggplant belongs to the same family as tomatoes and grows in almost the exact same way, and requires nearly the same care. I have started the black beauties in doors and am waiting for them to grow a few sets of leaves before I put them out side.
I look forward to some eggplant parmesan with fresh eggplant as the star of the dish the summer!

What type of containers are you using?

@Houston Gardener,
They are 3″ disposable plastic drinking cups with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.
I have found that peat post (commonly used) will leach a lot of water and nutrients from the soil making them unavailable to the plant!

I’ve grown them and ichiban, both in earthgrow containers and they did really well. I think there is a variety with florida in the name developed especially for down here.

@earhworm77,
If you are talking about Florida High Bush, they are very large and not quite as flavorful as some of the other varieties!

I have a respectably-sized eggplant that puts out flowers galore never produces any fruit. Any ideas what might be wrong?

@Karla,
It is a little early in the season for the eggplant, but I am not 100% sure if that is what is causing the issue! Are the flowers falling off the plant, if so, it could be blossom drop!
